EA SPOTRS FC 24 (FC 24) is receiving a lot of criticism right after announcing that it will enable mixed-gender teams in Ultimate team mode. I think this is not right decision for users or soccer game community.
The soccer game FIFA series developed by EA has been a hit in the global soccer game market for a long time. Now, the phrase FIFA disappears from the game title, but contents of the series are fully inherited by FC 24. FC 24 is a new work that EA has to show externally that there is no problem even if the phrase 'FIFA' is not in the game title.
However, an unexpected announcement came out of such an important new work. Female players are added to the most popular mode, Ultimate Team mode. And mixed-gender teams are also possible in that mode. When I first heard this news, I said 'Why in God’s name?’ I didn’t understand that decision at all. Personally, I've been playing soccer games for 25 years, and I've never wanted anything like this in a soccer game.
Let's talk about soccer game development for a moment. Adding a large number of female players to a game takes more effort to develop. EA would also have to sign separate licensing agreements with the women's soccer team and female soccer players, and may have to do separate motion capture work. Not all are easy tasks. While these various tasks are required for development, there was little demand from users to ‘add female players’. Nonetheless, EA implemented female players, and this time they joined the Ultimate Team mode as well.
First of all, there is nothing wrong with implementing female players in FC 24. This is because it reflects real football. In that point, there is no ‘demand’ but there is a ‘pretext’. However, there is no ‘demand’ and ‘pretext’ to enable a mixed-gender team in Ultimate Team mode. This is because it is a form of soccer that does not exist in reality. In addition, in this structure, the ability of male and female players is also a very sensitive topic. For example, when a certain female player's abilities are set similarly to famous players such as Ronaldo, Messi, and Mbappe, how many users can understand this?
The biggest problem is that the presence of female players in Ultimate Team mode is directly related to users' spending. In Ultimate Team Mode, the way users acquire players is by purchasing ‘player packs’, which are loot boxes. However, when many female players join the Ultimate Team mode, the number of players appearing in the ‘player pack’ increases rapidly. As a result, users have to pay more to get the players they want in the player pack. There is no demand, no cause, no pretext, but EA's profit would increase. This is the reason why users fiercely criticized it even before its release.
This will be a decision that users will not like. Nevertheless, the reason EA is able to do this is simple. This is because the popularity of the series developed by EA is unrivaled in the global soccer game market. In other words, even if users do not like FC 24, there is no suitable alternative. The only alternative that can be mentioned is Konami's 'eFootball', but the current state of this series is not good enough to replace FC 24. The ‘Football Manager’ (FM) series cannot be a substitute because the game is completely different from FC 24.
What can FC 24 users do to change this situation? Only when sales of FC 24's Ultimate Team mode plummet, EA will sense that ‘something's wrong’
