Director Hwang Jae-ho of MINTROCKET, a sub-brand of NEXON, a key player in the success of "DAVE THE DIVER," announced plans to redefine the organization's direction.
NEXON unveiled a video on MINTROCKET's official channel on the night of the 24th, featuring Director Hwang's insights on the new MINTROCKET.
MINTROCKET, founded last year as a sub-brand of NEXON, focuses on creating innovative and fun-centric games on a smaller scale, prioritizing creativity over profit.
Upon its debut, "DAVE THE DIVER" (hereafter referred to as "DAVE") enjoyed widespread success, selling over 3 million copies worldwide. The game received critical acclaim, earning a MUST-PLAY badge on the review aggregator site Metacritic with a score exceeding 90.
The game won The Excellence Award at the 2023 Korea Game Awards, was selected for Steam's 2023 Sit Back and Relax Award, and was named one of the best games of 2023 by foreign media outlets including The New York Times. It was also nominated for the Golden Joystick Awards and The Game Awards. Additionally, it won the Game Design category at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Games Awards, becoming the first Korean game to do so, further solidifying its place in the global gaming industry.
Despite the advantages of autonomous development within the organization, the excessive independence of each development team hindered the sharing of experiences from earlier projects like "DAVE." Moreover, criticisms were raised regarding the lack of clear direction and quality assurance systems, leading to skepticism among users.
Furthermore, upon "DAVE" being nominated for multiple awards, they encountered overseas developers and expressed considerable shock. Witnessing highly skilled individuals crafting outstanding games regardless of nationality, they were deeply impressed by their extraordinary creativity and managerial prowess.
Hence, rather than working independently, they felt the need to share their experiences more closely and refine them collectively. These sentiments resonated within the team, leading to a redefinition of MINTROCKET and a renewed focus on its direction.
This led to Director Hwang taking over the reins at MINTROCKET headquarters. Having paved a new path with "DAVE" through a challenging journey, he resonated with the request to further expand upon that experience.
Recently, NEXON Korea appointed Park Yong-hyun, the CEO of NEXON Games, as the Vice President of Development, overseeing the large-scale projects of the "Big" titles division. Additionally, MINTROCKET was elevated to independent MINTROCKET Headquarters and nominated Director Hwang Jae-ho as its head.
MINTROCKET is responsible for NEXON's "Little" parts, aiming to develop small, distinctive, and slightly more casual games. The demo of the upcoming racing game "Wake Runner" received mixed reviews, leading to its swift cancellation. Meanwhile, the "NAKWON: LAST PARADISE" project, which demonstrated significant potential during alpha testing, is slated to transition to NEXON's "Big" project due to the size of the development team and the genre's characteristics. It will undergo further development on a larger scale with enhanced support.
The much-discussed Chosun tiger project, "Project V," has reportedly been restructured to integrate visual research expertise into NEXON's major projects.
Additionally, there are ongoing deliberations regarding the '"DAVE" IP, which may include DLCs. Additionally, among NEXON's existing projects, two or three have been carefully chosen to align with MINTROCKET's aesthetic, with a focus on concentrated development efforts. Close collaboration is planned to ensure their success on a global scale.
Moreover, they are aware of users' desire for vibrant and refreshing single-player games from MINTROCKET, and they are actively preparing such titles. However, they have also stated their openness to including mobile or multiplayer games if they align well with the studio's vision and offer enjoyable experiences. Furthermore, since the concrete plans for the new MINTROCKET have only recently started to take shape, there are currently no projects ready for immediate release. They have assured transparent communication through various channels once projects are ready to be unveiled.
Lastly, Director Hwang concluded with these words: 'I entered this industry because of my passion for games, and I hope the Korean gaming industry isn't solely remembered for the question, "Will it make money?" As a member of this industry, I want to see cool and fun games coming out of Korea, and I want them to be successful financially. MINTROCKET will lead the charge in this endeavor. We ask for your support and encourage creative development teams with great ideas to reach out to us. Let's explore opportunities to collaborate. We look forward to presenting you with exciting projects that will spark your excitement.'
