NEXON introduced the thrilling, hardcore experience of Korean RPGs to the Japanese market with their new title, The First Berserker: Khazan.
On September 26, NEXON participated in the Tokyo Game Show 2024 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan, showcasing The First Berserker: Khazan at their exclusive booth. After making its debut at gamescom in August, this was the first time Japanese players got to experience the game.
Within the universe of Dungeon & Fighter, Khazan tells the revenge story of the Great General Khazan of the Pell Los Empire. The action RPG will be released on both PC and consoles, focusing on delivering intense combat that recreates the feel of hardcore action.
During the Tokyo Game Show, players could experience the early stages of the game, where Khazan is wrongfully exiled and falls into the Heinmach area after a landslide. Two boss battles, against Volbaino and Rangkus, were also available to play.
Visually, Khazan uses 3D cel-shaded animation, giving it a broad appeal with high-quality visuals reminiscent of animated films. The character movements in combat and traversal are smooth and fluid. At the same time, such as the snow-covered Heinmach, are beautifully rendered, offering an immersive anime-like feel.
Heinmach serves as a tutorial area where players learn basic controls, including movement, defense, dodging, and falling attacks. The stage design gradually introduces various systems, blending combat challenges with a natural learning curve for players.
Battling even a single enemy on the field makes it clear that Khazan distances itself from a soullike experience. However, it remains a serious game with good reason for its "hardcore RPG" label. It sits between a soullike and traditional action game, aiming to appeal to fans of both genres.
In combat, even minor enemies can’t be taken lightly. Managing stamina is crucial, as reckless attacks or blocking will drain your stamina bar, leaving Khazan in a groggy state where he is vulnerable to heavy damage.
This stamina system applies to enemies as well, meaning that while dealing damage is important, depleting an enemy’s stamina and forcing them into a groggy state can lead to greater damage opportunities. This adds strategic depth to the combat, requiring players to think ahead.
Khazan grows stronger progressively through combat. Players can enhance their basic stats by equipping new gear, with slots available for weapons, helmets, armor, gloves, pants, shoes, and accessories. Additionally, up to six items can be registered in quick-access slots for rapid use during battle.
To enhance Khazan's stats, players collect Lacrima from battles. The five core stats—Vitality, Endurance, Strength, Wisdom, and Dexterity—start with a base value of 10 each. Players can invest in Lacrima to boost the attributes that best suit their preferred combat style.
Raising these attributes affects a range of stats, including maximum health, maximum stamina, attack power, and defense. Since each attribute closely interacts with multiple stats, players have the freedom to customize Khazan’s development to fit their preferred combat style.
The combat system is forgiving, allowing for quick reactions to enemy attacks. Balancing dodging and guarding is key to success. With precise timing, Khazan can activate a Just Guard that reduces both stamina damage and stun, while dealing stamina and might damage enemies.
During the demo's boss battles, players had the opportunity to test a variety of weapons. The greatsword stands out for its powerful, charged attacks, which are slow but deliver massive damage. Its strength in both defense and counterattacks offers a highly satisfying playstyle for those who enjoy overpowering enemies.
In contrast, the spear trades raw attack power for exceptional range and wide area coverage. It doesn’t consume stamina during combos, giving players more freedom in stamina management and making it perfect for finishing off weary enemies.
Both boss fights—against the towering Volbaino and the enraged Rangkus—emphasize strategic stamina management. Volbaino, a giant deer-like creature, uses its immense size to deliver devastating downward strikes. Rangkus, a man consumed by fury after losing his home and family to the Hismar Conquest, fights with relentless aggression.
In addition to the basic attacks, dodges, guards, and Just Guard mechanics learned in the tutorial, players can further enhance their effectiveness in boss battles by utilizing skills triggered by two additional buttons.
The demo was played using the PS5 DualSense controller, with L1 and R1 assigned as the first and second skill combination buttons, respectively. Skills are activated by pressing these buttons with the basic attack buttons. For example, Reflection—a parry move that repels enemy attacks and reduces their stamina recovery—is activated by pressing L1 along with the strong attack button.
Additionally, counterattacks allow Khazan to fully recover stamina and incapacitate enemies, highlighting the excitement of dramatic turnarounds in battle. Skills such as the two-hit Slash and the Axe Throw are part of this repertoire, with each skill strategically designed for various purposes, including attacking, buffing, and evading.
While not classified as skills, various actions can be triggered through additional button inputs after dodging or sprinting. Although these techniques may not deal significant damage, they add a wealth of animations and actions, enriching the combat experience and providing a more dynamic approach to attacks.
The First Berserker: Khazan will kick off a technical closed beta for PS5 and Xbox Series X on October 11, with a full release scheduled for 2025. This beta serves as the final refinement before launch. The game will also be available on PC through Steam, aiming to introduce the captivating Dungeon & Fighter universe to players worldwide.
