The 22nd National Assembly Game Policy Forum has been officially launched. Thirty-six members from both ruling and opposition parties participated, along with related associations that included the Korea Association of Game Industry, Korea Mobile Game Association, Korea Game Society, Korean Game User Association, Korea e-Sports Association, Korea Game Policy Society, and the Game Culture Foundation. The mere fact that the National Assembly and these organizations have come together after a long time has sparked expectations for the advancement and improvement of perceptions regarding the game industry.
This isn’t the first time that the National Assembly has launched a game policy forum. It began back in September 2017 during the 20th National Assembly, with a policy proposal presentation and a game exhibition. In the 21st National Assembly, a national assembly game contest was held. The number of members of the National Assembly and associations participating in this game policy forum has since increased, with the participation of gamer user groups being a notable change. I send my support to Representative Cho Seung-rae, who has been leading the game forum in the National Assembly for seven years and is serving as a Co-Representative.
Game-related forums are not uncommon even outside of National Assembly sponsorship, with various events on the game ecosystem being held throughout the year by academic societies, media, and the industry. Nevertheless, a forum centered on the National Assembly is particularly welcome for various reasons. Active participation by lawmakers is raising political interest in the game industry and is expected to expand policy support for the development of the industry. From the 22nd National Assembly Game Policy Forum, I expect policies to be implemented that will provide new growth engines and enhance global competitiveness for the game industry. I am also hoping for active efforts to improve the perception of the game industry.
To improve recognition, games must be more widely acknowledged as a valuable form of cultural content. The economic effects, social contributions, and cultural values of the game industry need to be regularly analyzed and presented based on objective data. As convergence with various fields like webtoons, movies, music, and education is trending, gathering opinions from experts in other areas and mutual cooperation seem to be necessary. Therefore, policies that will form the foundation of the future game culture should be developed to match the changing times.
By gathering opinions from various stakeholders about the challenges and opportunities facing the game industry, and enhancing the communication and cooperation among forum members, it will be possible to develop solutions that can contribute to the development of the game ecosystem. The forum should propose rational policies through its activation, and ensure their execution by maintaining close coordination with the government.
Discussions confined to narrow views are no longer acceptable. Continual rehashing of the same ideas is also unacceptable. Temporary measures will no longer work. I look forward to a substantial operation of the forum, as much as its beginning. Numerous gamers will continue to monitor whether the National Assembly Game Policy Forum is being actively and continuously operated.
