The troika system, which was a fierce competitor within the PC Bang FPS genre, has collapsed. Blizzard's “Overwatch 2” has continued to decline, giving rise to a new competitive structure between Riot Games' “Valorant” and NEXON's “Sudden Attack.”

According to the PC Bang game statistics service The Log, “Valorant” and “Sudden Attack” ranked 3rd and 4th, respectively, in the PC Bang weekly rankings for the first week of March 2024. “Overwatch 2” dropped one spot from the previous week to 7th place.

The three titles have been jostling for position within the PC Bang FPS genre. In terms of the weekly share, Riot Games' “Valorant” recorded 8.17%, NEXON's “Sudden Attack” 6.12%, and Blizzard's “Overwatch 2” 4.47%. All three games saw a reduction in playtime from the previous week, presumably due to the start of the new school term.

However, “Valorant” succeeded in seizing the upper hand in the PC Bang FPS competition by surpassing a 10% daily share, as of March 9th. It has received enthusiastic support from teenagers and players in their twenties. Hence, the share is not as high during weekdays, but a surge in weekend logins has pushed it to a new personal best of 10.29%.

One can look to Riot Games' flagship “League of Legends” for the reasons behind the popularity of “Valorant.” As the top e-sports game, “League of Legends” offers fun in terms of both playing and watching. “Valorant” has also capitalized on various global e-sports tournaments, while transitioning from being enjoyable to watch to also being enjoyable to play.

Notably, the seasonal “Valorant Champions Tour (VCT)” has been gaining increasing popularity and attention each year. The tournament, which takes place across regions like the Pacific, Americas, and EMEA, has expanded this year with the addition of China's CNO. Moreover, “Valorant Champions 2024” is set to take place in South Korea in August, marking the first time it will be held in the Asia-Pacific region, reflecting the high popularity of the game in Asian territories.

Hot on the heels of “Valorant,” “Sudden Attack” can boast of seasoned excellence. The release of characters modeled after celebrities has become a signature content feature for “Sudden Attack.” Recently, characters Chuu and Jo Yuri were introduced. Furthermore, the game drew attention with the introduction of the My Gun2 modification system.

My Gun2, true to its name, offers players the fun of customizing their weapons. The modification system has been expanded up to level 100, and reaching this level adds a core feature called the “Kill Effect.” When opponents are eliminated, a special effect appears above the defeated character, adding visual enjoyment to the gameplay. A weapon overhaul was also carried out in February, with a focus on better balancing.

Blizzard's “Overwatch 2” faced significant changes with a major patch in February, marking Season 9 of its service. However, the drastic changes divided opinions among players. Expanding the size of the projectiles, which was aimed at approaching the essence of a shooting game by making it easier to shoot and hit, was seen in a positive light. On the other hand, the addition of self-healing to tank and DPS heroes muddled the role of the support heroes, and the passive changes for DPS heroes led to an easier melting of tank heroes, causing some to say that the fun has decreased.

Overwatch 2” hopes to rebound with various collaborations. In a collaboration with Porsche, the popular tank hero D.Va will debut a skin inspired by Porsche's “Macan Electric” in Season 10. Furthermore, a collaboration with the animation “Cowboy Bebop” is already underway, with the introduction of “Overwatch 2” heroes transformed into major characters like Spike and Jet.
