NEXON UNIVERSE's global blockchain project, known as “MapleStory Universe,” has ended its relationship with Polygon and entered into a strategic partnership with Avalanche.

NEXON UNIVERSE announced this strategic partnership with Avalanche, the smart contract platform, through its official website on February 11th. 

MapleStory Universe intends to utilize Avalanche's “Subnet” technology, which supports custom blockchains, to expand its blockchain ecosystem. The plan also includes various activities for a technical collaboration to build a stable service.

Avalanche has several advantages over other Layer 1 blockchains like Bitcoin, Ethereum, NEAR, Solana, and Polkadot, as it is known for its unlimited transaction capacity and the fastest transaction speeds. Additionally, it can boast of over a thousand validators and an 80% safety margin. The official token name of Avalanche is “AVAX.”

MapleStory Universe is planning to launch “MapleStoryN,” a PC MMORPG based on blockchain with Subnet technology, in selected countries within this year and will aim to release various tools and applications in the future.

Along with this collaboration announcement, NEXON UNIVERSE declared that it will host a joint panel talk with Avalanche at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2024 in San Francisco, where it will introduce how Subnet technology will be integrated into “MapleStoryN.”

The deal with Avalanche signifies the end of an ongoing blockchain business relationship with Polygon. Last year, NEXON announced a blockchain technology partnership with Polygon at GDC 2023, which drew significant attention as a high-profile partnership with one of the highest-grossing game companies in Korea.

However, following this announcement, there were no notable developments or movements from the two organizations. Key figures at Polygon resigned consecutively, and its competitive transaction fees gradually lost their edge as competitors emerged. Early this year, rumors of a split began to surface, and this recent announcement has officially confirmed NEXON’s separation from Polygon.
