The first new champion of “League of Legends” in 2025, “Mel,” is stirring up excitement and bringing freshness to the game.
On the 9th, Riot Games introduced the 170th new champion, called “Mel,” on the “League of Legends” test server. “Mel,” who is a core character from the Arcane series, had heightened expectations of appearing in “League of Legends” through her appearances in other Riot games.
In November 2024, Riot continued its efforts to enhance the universe for “League of Legends” alongside the broadcast of the new season of the popular animation “Arcane.” Along with the release of the new champion “Ambessa,” key champions were reworked in the game, and new Noxus-themed elements were added in the new season to garner further interest.
The new champion “Mel” became a focal point upon debuting in the new season's opening trailer and continued to be a hot topic during subsequent in-game updates. In particular, her unique skills and new gameplay strategies that could dominate future battles have heightened her visibility.
Mel's core skill is “Rebuttal,” her W skill, which can reflect projectiles and even ultimate abilities from other champions. This ability is predicted to lead to significant changes in the mid or support roles, as the deflected abilities become Mel's own, allowing her to use the powers of the original skills, effectively providing an invincible-level reflection ability.
After her debut on the “League of Legends” test server, Mel became a subject of experimentation among various users. Scenes of players trying to find applications for the W skill “Rebuttal” began to unfold, and videos highlighting extreme cooldown reductions were shared among users, bringing enjoyment.
In “Champion Spotlight - Mel, the Soul's Reflection,” which was released alongside Mel's launch, Riot Games detailed the intentions behind her skill set and its applications, along with her strengths and weaknesses.
Her passive skill “Searing Brilliance” is a pivotal one; it stacks “Overwhelm” whenever she hits an enemy with a basic attack or skill. If the stacks surpass the current health and shields of an opponent, it triggers an execute effect, resulting in a kill. The passive skill also enhances basic attacks, making it highly effective during laning.
Furthermore, with her Q skill, “Radiant Volley,” Mel attacks a designated area with consecutive explosions, leveraging the passive enhancement and giving her an advantage in crowded fight scenarios.
The E skill, “Solar Snare,” launches an energy orb forward, providing a root effect. It also adds a slow effect to nearby enemy champions, making it efficient for engaging in lane battles and mid-to-late game team fights.
Her ultimate ability, “Golden Eclipse,” enhances the features of Mel' by boosting the damage from “Overwhelm” stacks and dealing proportional damage to all the opponents with stacks. While not delivering explosive damage, it provides significant area damage, enabling an advantageous positioning in battles.
Mel delivers a perfect performance as a mid-laner or supporter, setting her up as an overpowered champion. However, she also has some weaknesses. Her W skill “Rebuttal” is less effective against melee champions, and its incorrect usage can inadvertently provide enemies with opportunities to engage, making her susceptible to counter-picks when it is chosen early.
Furthermore, if she disengages from battle, the “Overwhelm” stacks disappear, and against opponents equipped with items focused on “Magic Resistance,” she may not perform as effectively, which can also be counted as a downside. While her unique strengths and playstyle follow, they also have high-risk factors, making the outcome dependent on the player's mastery of the champion.
Meanwhile, Riot is showcasing its “League of Legends” content for 2025 with new champions and updated systems, while planning two more seasons to offer an enhanced universe and gameplay to users. eSports also aims to continue its popularity by integrating more global competitive elements.
