Wemade’s MMORPG MIR M: Vanguard and Vagabond (hereinafter referred to as MIR M) is making a full-fledged push into the Chinese market.
Having secured a foreign game license from China’s National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) in 2023, MIR M further paved the way for its entry into the Chinese market by signing a publishing agreement with The9, a leading Chinese gaming company, in 2024. On June 27, it began a week-long closed beta test (CBT) under its localized title, 传奇M: 暮光双龙 (which means Twilight Twin Dragons), drawing significant attention to its potential success in China.
MIR M is an MMORPG officially launched in South Korea by Wemade in June 2022. Building on the world of The Legend of Mir 2, it features modern graphics powered by Unreal Engine 4, a unique growth system centered on “Vanguard” and “Vagabond” paths, and a game structure emphasizing the dual pillars of economy and power. The game also supports cross-platform play between PC and mobile, expanding accessibility.
Upon release, MIR M achieved strong success, reaching third place in Google Play revenue and second in the Apple App Store in South Korea. Its global version also saw steady performance in Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America. However, in May 2024, Wemade announced the termination of MIR M’s domestic and global services, citing intensified competition and declining profitability. The company has since shifted its focus to the Chinese market.
China boasts strong brand recognition for The Legend of Mir IP and continues to show high demand for MMORPGs. In December 2023, Wemade received an official license from China’s National Press and Publication Administration to release the game under the local title 传奇M: 暮光双龙.
Securing the official game license was a major milestone, as it is a mandatory requirement for game publishing in China and had long been delayed or suspended. In March 2024, Wemade signed a publishing agreement with The9, enabling it to actively leverage The9’s expertise in localization, marketing, and service operations.
Founded in 1999, The9 is a Chinese online and mobile gaming company with a strong track record, including a successful NASDAQ listing in 2004. Building on its experience across a wide range of game genres, the company has recently expanded into new business areas such as blockchain and AI. Through its partnership with Wemade, The9 plans to bring MIR M to the Chinese market in a form optimized for local players.
The CBT, running from 10:00 AM on June 27 to 11:59 PM on July 4, targets 10,000 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Testers will receive an exclusive permanent title, 暮光双龙, with additional rewards and special titles based on rankings for those who report bugs or provide feedback. Game downloads were available starting at 10:00 AM on June 26.
During a recent conference call, Wemade’s CEO Park Kwan-ho stated, “The Chinese version of MIR M has been practically rebuilt over the past year and a half. We have about 70 developers in Beijing, supported by around 10 from our headquarters. While the graphics are similar, the content incorporates elements from the Mir series that Chinese players love, with a distinct business model.”
Indeed, The Legend of Mir series has enjoyed immense popularity in China, often referred to as a “national game,” and has inspired numerous licensed titles and lookalikes. Through the Chinese launch of MIR M, Wemade aims to both expand its IP and diversify its revenue streams. The company plans to release the game no later than Q3 2024.
Following the discontinuation of MIR M’s domestic and global services, Wemade is now preparing for a fresh leap in the Chinese market. As CEO Park Kwan-ho emphasized, the industry is closely watching how its China-tailored strategy goes beyond localization will translate into results in the competitive MMORPG landscape.
