NHN's gaming business spent this year without releasing any new titles. However, next year, they plan to unveil a series of new games that have been in the pipeline.
NHN operates in various sectors, including gaming, payments/advertising, commerce, technology, and content. Their performance in 2024 was generally good across these areas. However, NHN PAYCO faced over 100 billion won in losses due to the external impacts of the TMON and WeMakePrice crisis. As a result, NHN PAYCO is now under emergency management, pushing forward with business restructuring and cost-efficiency improvements.
Originally, NHN planned to release five new games in 2024, including one for the global market. However, to enhance the quality of these games, all releases have been postponed to 2025. Consequently, only the global launch of the existing Korean service collection SNG ‘Wooparoo Odyssey’ proceeded.
As for gaming business performance, sales amounted to 121.9 billion won in Q1, 106.4 billion won in Q2, and 112.5 billion won in Q3, showing a positive trend compared to 2023.
In Korea, web board games performed well, and overseas, games serviced by NHN PlayArt like ‘LINE: Disney Tsum Tsum’, ‘Yo-kai Watch: Wibble Wobble’, and ‘Compass’ saw good results. Essentially, existing games alone generated quarterly sales of around 100 billion won.
Instead, there was a focus on enhancing the quality of new productions. The zombie apocalypse game ‘DARKEST DAYS’, for example, underwent two closed beta tests this year to reassess its gameplay. As a result, 93% of participants rated the game as enjoyable, and 94% expressed willingness to play in the future.
Now, what remains is the launch of multiple new titles next year. The social casino game ‘Pebble City’ will lead these releases. Currently in soft launch in select overseas markets, ‘Pebble City’ is a multi-casino game themed around various casino concepts, with plans to launch in major markets in North America and Europe in February.
‘DARKEST DAYS’, after two rounds of testing, has confirmed player needs and will be released globally on PC and mobile platforms in one build. The final test will take place during the ‘Steam Next Fest’ in February for a last check.
Additionally, Ring Games is developing the collectible action RPG ‘ABYSSDIA’, entering the subculture market. Originally a Web3 game known as ‘Stella Fantasy’, it has been completely redeveloped from the original to become ‘ABYSSDIA’. It features a four-player battle system and a user-participatory story, set to launch on PC/mobile platforms in Q2.
Moreover, various other new titles are awaiting release, though detailed information has yet to be disclosed. These include the IP-based puzzle game ‘Project Star’, the puzzle game ‘ProjectMM’, the action genre game ‘REM’ (formerly Dream Hacker), the casual PvP game ‘Tiger Gate’, and the IP-based RPG ‘Project RE’. As their release dates have not been explicitly announced, they are expected to launch in the latter half of 2025 after the initial three mentioned.
Among these, ‘Project Star’ and ‘ProjectMM’ are developed internally, while ‘Tiger Gate’ and ‘REM’ are being developed by NHN PlayArt, and ‘Project RE’ is an externally developed project. Thus, NHN plans to make significant strides in the gaming industry through a variety of new titles developed using the capabilities of Korea and Japan.
