NHN Japan, a subsidiary of NHN, was established in 2013 with the philosophy of “Next Human Network = utilizing the infinite possibilities of the internet to connect people and realize a prosperous society.” The company is continuing to create valuable businesses and embrace various challenges in collaboration with its group of companies.
In September 2023, NHN maximized its business efficiency by consolidating its group companies in a new building called “NHN Atelier” located in Minato, the economic heart of Japan. The 13-story building houses NHN Japan, which oversees the Japanese subsidiary, and NHN Playart that specializes in mobile game development and business operations. They are currently servicing games such as “LINE: Disney Tsum Tsum” (developed by NHN Playart and serviced by Line Yahoo), “Yo-kai Watch: Wibble Wobble” (co-developed with LEVEL-5), and “#COMPASS” (co-developed with DWANGO).
In addition, the building hosts NHN comico, which operates the webtoon platform comico, and NHN Techorus, which handles the company’s IT solutions, among other divisions. The company has about 670 employees in total, with approximately 250 dedicated to the gaming business under NHN Playart.
On September 25th, NHN hosted a press event at NHN Atelier for Korean media, where they discussed the performance of their game business in Japan and their future strategies.
Chung Ujin, CEO of NHN and NHN Playart, praised the company's steady performance for about 25 years in the Japanese game industry since it started in 2000. He noted that NHN has made a strong impact in the Japanese market, ranking as “Website of the Year” for three consecutive years, and surpassing Yahoo! Games in the early 2000s through its game portal Hangame Japan.
Since the establishment of the mobile game development studio NHN Playart in 2013, the company has been increasingly prominent in the Japanese gaming industry. The success of games like “LINE: Disney Tsum Tsum,” “Yo-kai Watch: Wibble Wobble,” and “#COMPASS” has solidified NHN Playart's reputation in the casual game genre.
As Chung mentioned, “Like KRAFTON with 'BATTLEGROUNDS MOBILE' in India and NEXON with 'Dungeon & Fighter' in China, NHN has also experienced rapid growth in Japan.”
Since July 2019, Chung has been leading the gaming business across Korea and Japan as the CEO of NHN Playart. He explained, "The 'Play' in our name represents everyday fun, while 'Art' signifies creating fresh games that are overflowing with originality through rich imagination and technology. Our motto is to create games that everyone can enjoy - anytime, anywhere - from the moment they start playing. All of our employees are continuously striving to make more enjoyable games."
NHN is planning to maximize its expertise in IP use gained from the Japanese gaming business in 2025. Chung Ujin’s goal is to grow the game business revenue by more than 30% compared to 2024.
For the IP-based game services in Japan, he emphasized three strategies: selecting game styles suitable for IP use; choosing collaborative IPs that can synergize with the games; and maintaining close relationships with the IP owners. He is also planning to apply the know-how of using existing IPs to both popular and upcoming new games.
Chung Ujin announced, "Thanks to long-term collaborations with major IP owners, we are increasingly gaining opportunities to develop and publish games using popular Japanese IPs for global users, including Koreans. NHN and NHN Playart are preparing ten new titles from 2024 to 2025, among which 'Project G', 'Project RE', and 'Project BA' are IP-based games, and several other projects are underway but have not yet been disclosed."
The new IP games will be introduced sequentially to users. Initially, NHN is planning to partner with KADOKAWA, a comprehensive Japanese entertainment company, to develop joint ventures. KADOKAWA has influential IPs across various Japanese content sectors including manga, anime, novels, movies, and games. The details on this joint venture will be disclosed later.
In terms of game development, NHN Playart's development capabilities and NHN headquarters' cooperation will be expanded. Currently, the NHN Playart directors and NHN headquarters developers are working together on some projects. Chung concluded by stating that they are planning to gradually expand these collaborative projects between Korean and Japanese developers.
